'A Yorkshire Tale' Oak 5x4x4feet 2008.

I carved this on site with mallet and chisels over a three day period...the images appeared as the sculpture developed...even the compass in the foreground was only introduced when an orienteering event began in the carpark I was working in !

These were made in Wroclaw when I was an invited sculptor from the UK to take part in the International Polish Sculpture Symposium...they act as working drawings in space before and during the carving of 'Acrobats'.

'Acrobats' Elm 7feet tall.....carved in three days and sited in Poland.

'Adoption' Limestone 3x3x4feet. I did this when I was an Artist In Residence at Pudsey Crawshaw High School back in the mid 90s.

'Personal Uprising' 7feet tall Ash. I made this just after I had graduated from Birmingham College of Art in 1986.....the large branch limbs reaching up to the skies in hope and anticipation.

Direct carving is the dialogue between the sculptor and the materials....this was an exercise where I set up a still life group of objects and then proceeded to release their representations in stone...the journey is of both discovery and discipline.

Mountain Bike, Victorian Hiking, Knotties Stone, and Chippendale Chair......in progress down on the Chevin August 2009.
This is not only a homage to Thomas Chippendale the great cabinet maker from Otley but also I wanted it to be a magic chair for members of the public...when I run past it now it reminds me of an old Grandfather Chair we had in my family I remember as a child when growing up in Hunslet, south Leeds.
'The Knotties Stone'. I enjoyed the freedom I had when making this sculpture, as did I suppose the artists from many generations ago did when they carved their symbolic patterns in tough Yorkshire stone. The original Knotties Stone can be found higher up on West Chevin, and the animal in my sculpture has reference to both a Yorkshire ram and some of the exotic animals that were bred on the Chevin many years ago.
This side view of the first sculpture on the trail shows the climber and the bent mountain bike wheel....a reference to daredevil in us all.

This work was carved one sunny aftenoon in the backgarden of Chadwick Lodge in Hunslet, I cast some plaster in a milkcarton and sculpted 'Knowledge' (6x6x3ins)...I was in the sixth form at the time having just been given a place at Leeds College of Art.
I later made a larger version a decade later for the Chevin at the top of the steps.

This wooden totem 'A Family Group' 72x24x30 ins.
was made in 1987.

'Still Life II' Ancaster Stone 36x34x14ins.
This was a sculpture in stone I produced during my second year at Birmingham College of Art & Design and was exhibited in Manchester at the Northern Young Contemporaries in Manchester the same year. It was my first exploration of stone carving with power tools and now is sighted at the Royal Institute For the Blind in Birmingham.
'Still Life III' breezeblock 4x5x6feet.
This large assemblage carving in breezeblock was a real discovery in direct carving or me, it was the part of an Inter-Art College competition and I was fortunate enough to take it to the finals at The R.I.B.A. in london and come away as first prize winner, again when I was in my second year at college during my Fine Art degree.
